PETALING JAYA: Pahang are looking to in-form striker Dickson Nwakaeme to propel them to the top of the Super League standings.
The fifth-placed Elephants face fourth-placed Perak at the Darul Makmur Stadium in Kuantan on Tuesday night. Both are on 17 points and need a win to supplant leaders Police, on 18 points, in the 12-team league.
Pahang, the Malaysia Cup and FA Cup winners, are riding high on the back of four straight wins in the league, having beaten Lions XII (3-2), Kelantan (2-0), Felda United (1-0) and Terengganu (3-2).
And last Tuesday, Pahang took a step nearer to a last-16 berth in the AFC Cup with a 7-4 win over Myanmar’s Yadanarbon FC in their Group G match. Nwakaeme was in his element, scoring a hat-trick as well as setting up another three goals for the Elephants.
Pahang coach Zainal Abidin Hassan believes Nwakaeme will continue his good goalscoring form.
“Dickson is in a rich vein of form. His striker partner Matias Conti is also hitting form, scoring against Terengganu on Saturday. It bodes well for the team.
“The fans’ turnout has increased following our good run of results and we need to continue our good form.
“We want to head into the six-week break by getting the three points to go top of the standings,” said Zainal.
But the former international warned his team against taking Perak for granted.
“Perak have been performing well with a string of good results. Like us, they are motivated to win to top the table,” said Zainal.
